All-on-6: frequently asked questions
Short answers, with a link to the full guide for each topic.
All-on-6 is a full arch of fixed teeth held by six implants. It's usually done in two stages around four months apart, under local anaesthetic, with temporary teeth in between. Implants may last 10 to 20 years before retreatment with good care, according to the British Society of Periodontology. It isn't right for everyone: bone, health, smoking and medicines all matter.

Common questions
What is All-on-6?
A full arch of fixed teeth, upper or lower, held by six implants in the jawbone. The bridge is screwed in place and doesn't come out like a denture.
Is All-on-6 the same as All-on-4?
No. All-on-4® is a Nobel Biocare trademark for a full arch on four implants. All-on-6 uses six. Research shows similar survival, with less bone loss around implants when six are used.
Does All-on-6 hurt?
The surgery is done under local anaesthetic. Afterwards, soreness and swelling for a few days are normal and are managed with painkillers your dentist recommends.
How long is recovery?
The first few days are the most uncomfortable. Many people return to desk work within about a week. Implants take around four months to heal before the final bridge.
Will I have teeth straight after surgery?
Often, yes. A fixed temporary bridge is commonly fitted within a day or two, sometimes the same day, if the implants are firm enough.
What can I eat after All-on-6?
Soft foods while the implants heal; avoid hard, crunchy and chewy foods on the temporary bridge. With the final bridge, most foods are possible again.
How do I clean All-on-6?
Brush twice a day and clean under the bridge daily with interdental brushes, super floss or a water flosser. See a dentist and hygienist regularly.
How long does All-on-6 last?
With care and maintenance, implants may be expected to last 10 to 20 years before retreatment, according to the British Society of Periodontology. The bridge may need repair sooner.
What are the main risks?
Implant failure, infection around the implants (peri-implantitis) and wear or chipping of the bridge. Smoking, diabetes and a history of gum disease increase the risk.
Can I have All-on-6 if I smoke?
Sometimes, but smoking increases the risk of implant problems. Stopping before and after surgery improves the odds. Your dentist will discuss it honestly.
Is there an age limit?
No fixed upper limit. General health, bone and the ability to keep the bridge clean matter more than age.
Is All-on-6 available on the NHS?
Rarely. The NHS says implants are usually only available privately. The BSP notes NHS implants are for a select group, such as after cancer treatment or trauma.
What does All-on-6 cost?
It depends on materials, extractions, grafts and one or both jaws. Our sister guide allon6cost.co.uk covers UK and Turkey costs and what a quote should include.
